Grapefruit is a citrus fruit which has a bittersweet to sour taste and can be consumed as a juice or whole fruit. It has high nutritious value as it contains high fibre content and a range of essential vitamins and minerals. It is a great food to include in our diet.
However, for people who are taking certain cholesterol lowering medications or supplements to maintain healthy lipid levels including HypoCol®*, a 100% natural product, they should avoid taking grapefruit. This is because grapefruit contains an enzyme which can block the metabolism of these medications in the gut. Instead of being metabolised, more of the medication can pass into the bloodstream and stay longer in the body, increasing your risk for side effects such as liver and muscle damage.
Grapefruit can also affect some other medications. Please consult a healthcare professional to check if grapefruit juice interacts with your medications or supplements, or for more information on other food-drug interactions.
*HypoCol® is a Chinese Proprietary Medicine. Please consult your physician if you are taking other medications/ any prescriptive medication.
