(WPU) Red Yeast Rice
Red Yeast Rice has been a food flavouring and colouring additive in the Chinese cuisine for more than 1000 years. The famous red yeast chicken and red yeast rice noodles are still very popular with the Fu Zhous in Singapore. Since the ancient days, red yeast rice has been known to be a medicinal food. In fact, red yeast rice, called ‘Hong Qu’ in Mandarin is recorded in the Compendium of Materia Medica since the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) as a medicine to improve blood circulation.
In the 1970’s, a Japanese scientist discovered that selected strains of Monascus purpureus yeast on fermentation with rice produce certain metabolites, known collectively as Monacolins, which can effectively inhibit HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme that is responsible for lipid production in the liver.
In the 1980’s, Professor Zhang Maoliang of Peking University identified specific strains of Monascus purpureus yeast which, when fermented under strict control, produce monacolins with benefits on maintaining healthy lipid levels. WPU has developed the manufacturing process for the production of proprietary red yeast rice (WPU RYR, US patent number 6046022).
In the years that followed, Professor Zhang and his team from Peking University, in collaboration with leading medical institutions throughout China, carried out extensive clinical research of WPU RYR in maintaining healthy lipid levels. Different concentrations of WPU RYR is formulated into two products, including HypoCol® (WPU RYII) and Xuezhikang™ (WPU RYI).
In more than 60 clinical studies, thousands of people have achieved healthy lipid levels with various dosages of WPU Red Yeast Rice, combined with a sensible diet and exercise programme.
Extensive clinical trials have been carried out in USA, China, Singapore and Norway on products containing different concentrations of pure strain red yeast rice from WBL Peking University Biotech Co. Ltd (WPU). These studies have shown that they maintain healthy blood lipid levels.
